Companies are working together to enhance Motorola Solutions’ CrimeReports Web-based information sharing service that aims to help build trust between law enforcement and communities they serve

  • Motorola Solutions CrimeReports powered by Socrata is used globally by 1,100 law enforcement agencies to provide approximately 100-million people with information, such as when and where a crime is committed, that is easily accessible on smart phones, tablets and computers
  • Officers can engage more efficiently with citizens via improved mapping, charts, graphs and trend tools
  • Other features include customized alerts for citizens based on areas of interest and the ability to share CrimeReports’ maps on Web pages, blogs and social media sites

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. & SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) and Socrata are partnering to give law enforcement user-friendly, out-of-the-box technology to help increase transparency and build trust through improved community engagement.

Motorola Solutions’ CrimeReports is already one of the largest, most comprehensive citizen-facing crime-mapping websites in the world. By working closely with Socrata, Motorola Solutions has redesigned CrimeReports to help citizens more easily find and explore crime data and to assist law enforcement and local governments meet federal mandates for accountability and transparency.

The new Motorola Solutions CrimeReports powered by Socrata gives law enforcement agencies more ways to efficiently engage with citizens by providing enhanced mapping capabilities, charts, graphs and trend tools. Information is provided via enhanced citizen-facing analytics and data views, including a breakdown by crime type, geographic area (including neighborhoods and patrol areas) and date range.

“Law enforcement agencies across the country are realizing that by engaging citizens and empowering them with information, they can be additional eyes and ears to help provide tips, witness accounts, testify and potentially reduce crime,” says Tom Guthrie, vice president, Motorola Solutions Smart Public Safety. “Through Motorola Solutions’ partnership with Socrata, CrimeReports will deliver more insights to the public, which will in-turn help agencies build trust with citizens, leading to increased engagement and less time responding to Freedom of Information Act requests.”

Citizens can also view 9-1-1 “calls-for-service” data to better understand how police resources are being allocated. Enhanced alerting will allow citizens to select areas of interest and receive notifications on new crime in those areas. Law enforcement will be able to push specific alerts to notify citizens of major events or safety issues. CrimeReports’ maps can also be embedded on any Web page, including agency-operated sites, personal blogs and news media sites, or shared via email or social media.

“We recognize that police departments across the country are eager to share their information as a crucial step toward building trust and productive dialogue with their communities,” says Kevin Merritt, chief executive officer, Socrata. “Socrata and Motorola Solutions have partnered to provide a cost-effective, user-friendly and ready-to-deploy solution that enables citizens to find answers to the questions they have more quickly, intuitively and with much-needed context.”

Agencies can further increase community engagement by using Motorola Solutions’ TipSoft, which is built into CrimeReports and allows citizens to send anonymous tips to police and allows agencies to send alerts to residents. Additionally, agencies can use Socrata’s newly released Perspectives product to provide narrative and context to the data published in CrimeReports to help engage with communities and better allocate resources.
