Local Community Leaders Celebrate Groundbreaking of New Homes at University District

March 9, 2016 5:01 PM EST

ROHNERT PARK, Calif., March 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Richmond American Homes of California, a subsidiary of M.D.C. Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MDC), is pleased to announce that its recent groundbreaking celebration at Mulberry in Rohnert Park was a rousing success. Members of the media and over 40 community leaders, including Mayor Gina Belforte, city council members, the City Manager and members of the planning commission were in attendance as shovels melded with earth, signifying the start of construction in the first new home community in the University District masterplan.

Located in scenic wine country, just south of Santa Rosa and west of Napa, Mulberry is a multi-phase community boasting over 1,600 planned homes. Future amenities will include a 10-acre community park, sports fields, playgrounds and picnic areas. Residents will also enjoy easy access to Sonoma State University, year-round performances at the Green Music Center and a wide assortment of shops and restaurants. Commuters will appreciate close proximity to the upcoming Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART Train) station.

Richmond American Homes Division President Craig Merry kicked off the groundbreaking ceremony by expressing his gratitude to the city for allowing the builder to create new housing that will offer enhanced energy efficiency and technological advances for residents of Rohnert Park.  "Richmond American Homes' architecture offers families greater livability and social-connectivity, which translates into a lifestyle that matches Sonoma County living," said Merry.

And Merry is not the only one who is excited about the new development. "We are thrilled to see construction begin. Amidst a lot of talk about a housing shortage, I'm proud that in Rohnert Park we're building houses," said Council Member Amy Ahanotu.

The first phase of Mulberry is scheduled to open this summer. Richmond American homes at the community will offer three to five bedrooms and approximately 2,400 to 2,800 square feet. Complimentary design assistance and hundreds of exciting personalization options are available.
