McDonald's (MCD) 'Healthy' Salads Can be Worse for You than Burgers

February 8, 2016 11:51 AM EST

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) is aiming to add healthier items to its menus in an effort to appeal to the health-conscious crowd. Or, is it?

ArsTechnica noted Monday that McDonald's new Caesar Salad with Chicken (crispy or grilled) coupled with the company's Asiago Caesar Dressing packs 730 calories, 30g of carbs, 53g of fat, and 1,400mg of sodium.

By comparison, a Double Big Mac sandwich touts 680 calories, 45g of carbs, 38g of fat, and just 1,340mg of sodium.

So, the allegedly healthy salad option appears to be less healthy than a sandwich sporting four beef patties.

It should be noted that the dressing contains 210 calories, 22g of fat, and 260mg of carbs. The comparison also utilized the crispy chicken option, which is more likely to have a higher fat and calorie count versus the grilled chicken option.

Data comes from a study conducted by the Journal of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2015.
