Apple (AAPL) Said Looking to Add Distance to Wireless Charging Technology

If you hate the battery life on your smartphone and wish it would just charge itself up, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may have a surprise in store for you.

Bloomberg said late Thursday that Apple is working with partners in the U.S. and Asia on wireless charging which would let the device power-up from further away than ever.

Apple is evaluation a myriad of factors, including the loss of charge versus distance, before moving to implement the technology.

In 2010, Apple filed a patent for the concept of using near-field magnetic resonance to charge a device from as far as 1 meter. The company uses a similar technique to charge its Apple Watch from millimeters away.

Apple also filed a patent covering aluminum phone casings, which would allow radio waves to pass through.

While the technology might not make the iPhone a self-charging device from anywhere, being able to keep a phone charging from several feet away is sure to appeal to many consumers.

Broadcom and Qualcoom are two other notable companies working on wireless charging technology.

Shares of Apple are indicated higher Friday.
