October 7, 2015 9:52 AM EDT

HARTSVILLE, S.C., Oct. 07, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sonoco (NYSE: SON), one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, has donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross to aid in flood relief efforts in the Pee Dee and across the Palmetto State. This brings Sonoco’s total to $95,000 in Red Cross donations in 2015.

Sonoco has been headquartered in Hartsville, S.C., since its inception in 1899, and more than 2,000 of its employees currently call South Carolina home. Sonoco’s operations were not adversely impacted by the storm, but many of its employees, their families and their friends are facing hardships after the historic flooding.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by the severe flooding over the past several days,” said Jack Sanders, president and CEO. “As our state rebuilds, I have no doubt that the resiliency and faith of South Carolinians will continue to shine through this crisis.”

"The devastation from floods causes immediate and long-term recovery needs.  Thanks to generous supporters like Sonoco, we will be here as long as we are needed,” said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer of the Palmetto SC Region of the American Red Cross.
