Facebook (FB) Will Move to Keep Russian User Data Out of Russia

Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) is aiming to not move data on Russian users into Russia as the country's new On Personal Data law is set to come into effect on September 1st.

According to media report, Russian federal service of communications, information technology and mass media, Aleksandr Zharov, recently met with the Facebook Director on Public Policy Nordics, Eastern Europe and Russia, Thomas Myrup Kristensen. The two discussed a wide range of topics connted to the new Russian laws.

Facebook's main reason for not storing user data on Russian servers is economic inexpediency. The company also doesn't consider user information to be personal data.

The new, updated law On Personal Data requires the personal data of Russian citizens, including those collected on the Internet, to be stored in databases in Russia. More info on the law can be found here
