Deployment, Research Highlight Automated Vehicles Symposium 2015 in Ann Arbor

Companies, policymakers, educators and researchers meet at AVS 2015 to study future of automated transportation

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Automated Vehicles Symposium 2015, AVS 2015, a multidisciplinary forum designed to advance the deployment of automated vehicles, opens on Tuesday, July 21 and runs to Thursday, July 23 at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest Hotel and Conference Center.

AVS 2015 is organized by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International and the Transportation Research Board. The event will address key areas of research, technological advances, challenges and societal implications critical to the deployment of automated vehicles.   

Topics covered at AVS 2015 will include shared mobility, public policy, cybersecurity, human factors, validation, verification, legal, liability, finance, market acceptance and environmental impact.

"Automated vehicles have the potential to reduce driving risk factors and mitigate impairment," said Brian Wynne, president and CEO of AUVSI. "With additional benefits, such as protecting the environment, reducing traffic congestion, and improving mobility for the elderly and disabled, automated vehicles offer a wide variety of solutions for the roads ahead."

The symposium is expected to draw nearly 1,000 attendees, including companies, policymakers, educators, and researchers, participating in thought-provoking discussions that will shape the future of automated transportation.

The schedule of events planned for AVS 2015 include:

  • Keynote speeches by Dr. Chris Urmson, director, Self-Driving Cars, Google[x], and Dr. Mark R. Rosekind, administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • The grand opening of the University of Michigan's Mcity, a 32-acre automated vehicle testing facility, which will host live demonstrations of the latest technology from Delphi, Bosch, Nokia's HERE and University of Michigan/Local Motors 3-D printed 'SmartCarts'.
