Hulu Said Testing New Ad-Free Service (NFLX)

July 17, 2015 11:02 AM EDT

Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) shares are paring some of Thursday's gains amid reports that Hulu is planning to offer a new subscription option.

The WSJ reported that Hulu might offer an ad-free option to its service. The move comes as even current premium subscribers (at $7.99 per month) are required to sit through advertising breaks.

Neither Netflix nor Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) Prime make customers sit through ads.

Hulu might charge as much as $12 to $14 per month for the ad-free subscription, though pricing hasn't been set in stone yet. The high price point might indicate that Hulu is aiming to discourage current subs from moving to the ad-free service.

21st Century Fox (Nasdaq: FOXA), Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS), and Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) jointly own Hulu. Shares of Netflix are up about 0.3 percent.
