Watch Out, Zucks! Study Shows Teens Becoming Less Interested in Using Facebook (FB)

November 26, 2014 2:51 PM EST

Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) usage is down in the one segment that the social media giant would like to see rise: teens.

According to a recent study by GlobalWebIndex, citing its GW Social report, about 66 percent of teens (aged 16 to 19 years) in the U.S. and U.K. said they were using Facebook less frequently. Of the total 12,500 respondents surveyed, about 50 percent said they were on the site less often.

While the teen group hasn't left the site, the overall consensus is that interactions have dropped and the group is more passive about the site as a whole.

Results can be broken down further. GlobalWebIndex asked "For what reason are you using Facebook less than you used to?"

Answer choices were:

-- "I'm just not as interest in using Facebook as I used to be"

-- "I'm spending less time on social networks in general"

-- "I'm bored of Facebook"

-- "I don't think Facebook is secure or private enough"

-- "I'm fed up with Facebook making changes all the time"

-- "It's not as cool as it used to be"

The top answer for teens was "I'm just not as interest in using Facebook as I used to be," followed up by "I'm bored of Facebook."

Notably, lost interest also topped the overall category.

Shares of Facebook are up 2.8 percent.
