Speculation of Fierce GoPro (GPRO) Competition Seems Overdone Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season

November 13, 2014 1:17 PM EST

GoPro (NYSE: GPRO) is on watch Thursday following review of a competing product by a noted industry publication.

Motorcross Action Mag reviewed the Isaw A3 Extreme camera, with online publication being posted today. Overall, the magazine gave the A3 Extreme four out of five stars. The major issue was having to purchase a separate Micro SD card.

Conversely, the A3 Extreme listing on Amazon.com has just two reviews with an overall three out of four star rating. More here.

GoPro's similarly-priced HERO 3+ Silver Edition has 610 reviews with 4.5+ out of five stars. That listing is here.

Traders have been keeping an eye on GoPro since launch; more lower-cost options with solid reviews could hit the market over the next few months and that could crimp GoPro's sales and/or margins.

However, it appears that the company could be the one to beat for some time given its strong market penetration and brand name. Really, the name is becoming synonymous with 'action camera' much like Band-Aid is the general name used for an adhesive bandage.

Shares of GoPro are up 1.8 percent Thursday.
