What Does ABC's 'Blood & Oil' Premier Mean for Oil Prices?

September 29, 2015 10:49 AM EDT

ABC's new series "Blood & Oil" starring Don Johnson premiered on Sunday. While results of the premier are being called "modest" in Hollywood, Wall Street is looking at the show to possibly answer other questions. Namely, does the show indicate some type of top or bottom in oil prices.

Evercore ISI James West analyst sent out a 'just for fun' survey to investors Monday. Below are some of the questions he asked, and answers he received:

  1. Did you watch the season premiere of "Blood & Oil" last night? A: The reviews seem mixed with 45% of respondents having either watched the show or planning to do so.
  2. If Yes, what did you think of the episode? A: Of the 21 individuals who already watched the show, 39% thought it was pretty awful while 43% were in the "Mildly Entertaining" camp
  3. Did the season premiere of "Blood and Oil" mark the bottom, top, or call for "lower for longer"? A: In terms of whether the premiere marked the bottom or top, investors are all over the place with ~30% thinking lower for longer, ~30% calling the bottom, and ~20% admitting they take crazy pills. The remaining 20% either didn't know what "blood & oil" was.
  4. Was last night's episode realistic? A: 70% of respondents didn't think Sunday night's episode was realistic
  5. Was the green lighting of the show in early 2015 a prelude to the double-dip in commodity prices? A: The most divisive question was whether the green lighting of the show in early 2015 was a prelude to the double-dip in commodity prices with 50% saying yes and 50% saying "Mr. West, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
  6. Can Don Johnson really play an oil tycoon? A: yes
  7. Any thoughts, ramblings or criticisms about last night's episode or the show in general?
    1. Will try to watch the show, drink the blood, and get into the green zone. This my 7th cycle and it will not be very different from the past, I fear....
    2. Show sucks - nice mountain range with snow in ND. Does anyone in Hollywood travel outside of LA?
    3. Guess the trailer park at the railroad beat living in a van, down by the river. Liked the fire when the ember actually hit the tar pool where the 2 dudes were mud wrestling.
    4. you mean you weren't watching the football game and checking your draft kings line-up every 15 seconds to see if you had won .23?
    5. waaaay too formulaic, even for a night-time soap opera.
    6. It's all entertainment. Shouldn't take too serious.
    7. Can't wait for the spin-off where the laid-off frac team reunites for one last job to save the town from giant carnivorous worms in "Tremors - The Series"
    8. Will Tony Romo disown his brother in law for appearing in this show?
    9. I think the blood moon and eclipse really hurt the ratings. Also, hard to disentangle the effect of the blood moon from Blood and Oil. However, we can all agree that these are the two primary drivers of oil markets and more broadly financial markets.
    10. I would rather fight a dozen hungry wolves armed with two water pistols and a pillow than continue to try and make investments in this market. I just put my application in for the next Top Chef.
    11. Don Johnson is best cast when playing Kenny Powers' father.
    12. Here is a quote from the #1 country song on the charts right now - "I know what they say, money cant buy everything, well maybe so, but it can buy me a boat, and it can buy me a truck to pull it."
    13. Good one!
    14. I refuse to watch as Dallas set the gold standard for shows about oil and all others are cheap imitations!! Long live JR Ewing!
    15. your associate Alex is by far the strangest person I have ever came across
    16. History of spot oil over TV series Dallas (1978-1991):
