After an extensive review and talking with investors, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey analyst Robert Peck said his 'short list' of CEO candidates for Twitter, Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) remains Jack Dorsey, Adam Bain, Mike McCue, Ross Levinsohn, and Neal Mohan.

Peck said is imperative that the board CEO Search Committee "move quickly (but prudently) to hopefully limit distraction from current efforts and strategy (such as Project Lightning discussed today) and fortify the team in light of currently challenged metrics (2Q MAUs may decline from 1Q)."

On what are the search criteria, Peck highlighted: 1) avid user of the Twitter product; 2) history of product expertise; 3) strong advertiser relationships; 4) deep media relationships; and 5) experience running a large (media) organization.

Peck rules out suggestions like Reed Hastings, Spencer Rascoff, or Jeff Weiner may be strong ones, as they would be too difficult to pull away from their current CEO position. He also rules out other internal candidates, although they have tremendous respect for executives like Ev Williams, Anthony Noto, Kathy Savitt and Kevin Weill.

Meanwhile, investor suggestions are broader than just executives from the Internet sector, including executives from media (John Skipper), hardware (Sanjay Jha), and software (Scott Forstall).

The firm maintained a Neutral rating and price target of $40.
