Citi says buy the pullback in memory stocks as upcycle is still in early innings

Investing.com -- The current AI-driven memory upcycle remains in its early stages, Citi strategists say, arguing it could ultimately outperform the industry’s last major upcycle between 2001 and 2007.

The present cycle resembles that seven-year NAND upcycle, when new applications such as MP3 players and digital cameras drove demand and NAND increasingly displaced cassette tapes and analog camera film.

Memory stocks have recently fallen sharply after a blistering rally, with Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KS:005930) and SK Hynix (KS:000660) all down more than 20% from recent highs amid concerns over stretched valuations and AI capex spending.

Investing.com -- Bank of America reiterated a Buy rating and $1,550 price target on a key memory stock in a note on Tuesday, telling investors the recent pullback is an "enhanced buying opportunity" rather than a reason for concern.

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) is the stock in question. BofA analyst Vivek Arya acknowledged that memory prices and margins "will inevitably normalize at some point," particularly as new capacity arrives from mid-2027 through 2028.

But he said the recent reset reflects investors positioning ahead of an eventual downturn "rather than responding to the fundamentals," which he views as still improving.

Investing.com -- Citi said consensus estimates continue to underestimate future revenue growth and profitability tied to AI, despite hyperscaler cloud revenue accelerating to 48% in the second quarter from 39% in the first quarter.

The firm noted that collective backlog also accelerated to 151% versus 143% last quarter, reflecting continued acceleration in enterprise adoption. Cash Returns on Cash Invested over the last 12 months was relatively steady at 28% versus 29% in the first quarter.
