Fry's Food Stores and Safeway Agree to Defend Against a Possible Union Strike

November 10, 2009 6:37 PM EST

PHOENIX, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Fry's Food Stores and Safeway have entered into a mutual strike assistance and lockout agreement that provides for certain defensive measures in the event that the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 99 calls a strike against one of the grocery companies.

The grocers are currently engaged in labor negotiations with UFCW Local 99. The current labor contract expired last year, and a recent extension expired on October 31. Associates at Fry's have been working without a contract. The agreement does not preclude either Fry's or Safeway from independently entering into a settlement with UFCW Local 99.

"Fry's signed this agreement to protect our companies, our customers and our employees' jobs in the event of a union strike," said JoEllen Lynn, director of public and community affairs for Fry's.

Fry's remains committed to working toward a contract settlement. "The best outcome for everyone, especially our associates, is an agreement. We hope the union will allow members a chance to vote on our proposal," Lynn said.

The union has not held a vote on the company's current comprehensive proposal.
