The Dow Falls 3 Points, Nasdaq Drops 2
The Dow fell 3.01 points today to close at 13,236.53, the Nasdaq fell 2.65 points to close at 2,542.24 and the S&P 500 lost 0.72 points to close at 1,452.92. Oil gained $0.13 to close at $71.60 per barrel.
Volume was modest on the NYSE with 3.72 billion shares traded and 2.24 billion shares traded on the Nasdaq. Decliners topped Advancers on the NYSE by a margin of 17:16 and 17:14 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, TOP Tankers Inc (Nasdaq: TOPT) jumped 25% after the company entered into agreements to acquire three drybulk panamax vessels from unrelated third parties for approximately $222 million. JPMorgan and Cantor Fitzgerald also upgraded the stock this morning. SCO Group (Nasdaq: SCOX) fell 72% after The WSJ reported a federal court in Utah ruled that Novell Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL), not SCO Group Inc., is the rightful owner of the copyright in the Unix operating system. The ruling will effect SCO\'s effort to claim money for installations of Linux.
