Gainers:
Utilities Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLU) gained 0.4 percent to 35.1. After a sharp decline this month, utilities recovered losses this week, edging up by 2.5 percent. Utilities came under pressure in November in part because of fears over the fiscal cliff and expectations for increased dividend taxes. Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) was an early winner today, gaining 1.7 percent on reports Duke Chairman and CEO Jim Rogers would retire at the end of 2013.
Decliners:
Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) declined 1.75 percent to 47.2. Gold miners were lower across the board with AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (NYSE: AU) leading the charge. The decline relates to declines in the spot price of gold, which is lower by $10 to $1715 per ounce.
SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) declined 0.5 percent to 63.00. October retails spending in the U.S. showed a surprise declined of 0.2 percent, driven in part by adverse effects from Hurricane Sandy. Economists were expecting a flat reading. Sear (Nasdaq: SHLD) was among today’s losers, declining 2 percent. Sears is lower by 12 percent in 5-days.
