Gainers

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) up 4.69 percent to $54.64. Shares in Brazil are rebounding today following U.S. and European data. Jobless claims in the U.S. rose just 6,000 to 401,000, lower than the 410,000 expected. The positive outlook could help to lift commodities prices, a major part of Brazil's economy.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 7.12 percent to $3.46. Solars are moving higher, led by First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR), which is up 7.9 percent on talks of a possible takeover. Nothing has been confirmed by First Solar yet.

  • Industrial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLI) up 1.38 percent to $30.22. Alcoa (NYSE: AA) is leading the much-depressed industrials higher on positive economic signs. With ADP and jobless claims numbers this week both coming in stronger than expected, investors may be positioning for nonfarm numbers on Friday. Alcoa shares are 6 percent higher on the session. The company is expected to unofficially kick off third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, after the market closes.

Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.14 percent to $8.65. Hit a new 52-week low as net gas supplies rose 97 billion cubic feet for the week ended September 30th, compared to the 96 to 100 bcf gain expected on the Street. Nat gas is $0.022 lower to $3.548 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 0.92 percent to $49.80. The CBOE VIX is 1.4 percent lower today as markets are more relaxed on various data points. ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet said the bank would offer new emergency loans to banks, leaving rates unchanged in the process. The move is adding more stability to the 17-nation euro zone, which has been hampered by sovereign debt issues.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.40 percent to $22.26. As the euro zone is gaining some support, the euro is strengthening against the U.S. dollar as confidence returns. The EUR/USD is currently 0.5 percent better to €1.3423.
