Gainers

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) up 3.75 percent to $49.20. Despite South Korea's current-account surplus contracting to $401.3 million, the Bank of Korea still sees the nation retaining a surplus over the next year as emerging markets will continue to buy from South Korea amid European woes.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 2.65 percent to $12.22. Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) leading the financials higher Thursday, up about 4 percent on the session, as CEO Vikram Pandit has expressed confidence in Europe. Germany also approved expansion of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) by a vote of 523 to 85.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 3.23 percent to $32.26. Crude November contracts are $1.91 better to $83.12 per barrel on the Comex as the U.S. GDP in the second-quarter was revised higher, and Europe is moving closer to an expanded EFSF. From a previously revised reading of 1.0 percent, second-quarter GDP was revised to 1.3 percent today, showing improvement and expansion for the economy. Further, initial jobless claims came in at 391 thousand, below the 419 thousand expected by the market.

Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.11 percent to $49.66. The CBOE VIX is about 4 percent lower on the session, hanging below the $40 level, as market conditions are reacting to more favorable economic data Thursday after some rather volatile trading sessions.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.08 percent to $9.18. Natural gas is lower as expectations for cooler weather across much of the Midwest and Eastern U.S. have taken precedence over rebounding markets and potential increases in demand.
