Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/30: UNG, VXX Higher; XLF, SMH, EWZ Lower
Gainers
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 2.08% to $6.37. Hotter weather outlooks for the Northeastern U.S. is pushing the demand for nat gas higher today, as consumers will be looking to cool off as temps in cities like New York, Washington D.C., Boston, and Chicago are expected to reach in the 90's (F).
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.65% to $21.64. Shares trading higher today, if ever so slightly, as personal income, personal spending, and PCE prices all came in stronger than June's numbers. The CBOE VIX is up about 5.7% today.

- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.02% to $13.59. Financials trading lower today as personal spending increased in Jul (from 0.00% in June to $0.3% in July), and the Bank of Japan extended its emergency-lending program to boost the economy and taper-off the rising yen.
- Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 1.46% to $24.94. Led lower today by Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), who is acquiring Infineon's Wireless business, and Texas Instruments NYSE: TXN), which received a downgrade from Susquehanna from Buy to Neutral. INTC is trading down 1.55% and TXN is 2.61% lower.
- iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) down 1.98% to $67.33. Brazil's Bovespa index is declining today as their IGP-M Index rose more than expected. Brazil's central bank is not expected to raise rates this year, but may have to next year to curb excessive inflation. The index rose 0.77%, compared to the expectations for a 0.67% increase.
