Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/21: (USO) (XLF) (IYT) Higher; (VXX) (UNG) (UUP) Lower

Gainers
  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 1.20 percent to $38.86. Crude trading higher today as Greece may enter a potential aid package, helping to to curb borrowing costs and allow for further intervention with Greece and other European states. The news may mean a rebound in Europe, and is certainly a welcome announcement for U.S. markets. Also, the euro is seeing some upside becuase of the news, making crude contracts cheaper. Crude is $1.18 higher to $99.58 per barrel on the Comex.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 1.90 percent to $15.28. Financials following the broader markets today, as concerns over European debt ease slightly. Citigroup, Inc. (NYSE: C) is leading higher, up nearly 3 percent on the session.

  • iShares Dow Jones Transportation Average (NYSE: IYT) up 2.35 percent to $98.52. Being led by Union Pacific today, which is up 4.8 percent on the session, after solid second-quarter results. Earnings were $1.59 per share on revs of $4.86 billion in revs, compared with consensus views calling for earnings of $1.58 per share and revs of $4.74 billion.


Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.72 percent to $21.01. The CBOE VIX is trading about 7.8 percent lower on the session as traders cheer the potential Greek bailout.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.53 percent to $11.21. Nat gas is lower today following EIA data showing stores rose 60 billion cubic feet for the week, slightly shy of the 61 bcf analysts were expecting. August contracts are trading $0.050 lower to $4.450 per mmBtu on the Comex.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.89 percent to $21.14. As stated, the U.S. dollar is down today as investors and traders prefer the potential of the euro on Greek news. The EUR/USD is at €1.4372, a gain of over 1 percent on the session.
