Notable ETF Movers of the Day 06/23: XLP, VXX, UNG Up; EWJ, USO, IYR Down
Gainers
- Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLP) up 0.27% to $26.37. Philip Morris Int'l (NYSE: PM) is holding this ETF up today on a mixed day. The cigarette manufacturer lowered their FY10 EPS outlook, but just slightly. Shares of PM are up about 3% currently.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 2.23% to $27.08. Reacting to figures on the sales of new home today, which came in 32.7% below what the market was expecting, 300K versus 430K.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.85% to $8.27. Again, moving higher as the need for nat gas increases with warmer weather and an active hurricane season.
- iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) down 0.63% to $9.51. Japanese stocks are down on a stronger yen and weak U.S. economic data.
- United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down2.57% to $34.10. Down today as economic data show an increase in crude inventories by 2.02 million barrels last week. Additionally, the sector is also reacting to the new home sales number.
- iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) down 0.76% to $49.63. Down today given home sales numbers came in way under expectations. See the VXX report above.
