Notable ETF Movers of the Day 05/04: (VXX) (FXE) Higher; (XLE) (USO) (FXI) (SLV) Lower

Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 4.29 percent to $25.42. The CBOE VIX near-term index is trading 3.4 percent higher today, following paltry economic data today. ADP Employment numbers came in with 179,000 additions, shy of the 200K consensus estimate. Additionally, ISM Services was 52.8, missing the 57.4 that the Street was looking for.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.24 percent to $148.10. The euro is seeing some strength against the U.S. dollar today, following weak economic data in the U.S. Additionally, the euro is looking chipper ahead of teh ECB meeting scheduled for tomorrow, where hints at an interest rate hike may surface from ECB President Trichet.


Receders
  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 2.43 percent to $75.54. Led by Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: OXY), which is 3.5 percent lower today, as investors sell economic news that U.S. economic recovery is slowing a little, which may curb demand for energy.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.45 percent to $43.44. Usually crude moves in opposite direction of the U.S. dollar (which crude contracts are priced in), but today economic and inventory data are moving prices. Crude inventories increased 3.4 million barrels, which surpassed the 2 million the economists were looking for. June 11 contracts are down $1.62 to $109.43 per barrel.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 2.20 percent to $43.53. The Chinese government said that further tightening measures may be taken as taming inflation is 'critical.' Additionally, commodity stocks slumped right along with crude prices, as speculators may be cashing in somewhat and the outlook for ever-increasing demand is cooling.

  • iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) down 5.8 percent to $38.22. The underlying precious metal continues to sell-off from recent highs, down 20% over the past few sessions.
