Notable ETF Movers of the Day 04/29: USO, SPY, IYR Up; UNG, VXX, OIH Down (PALM, HPQ, RIG)

Gainers

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 2.38% to $40.92. Oil up on positive economic outlook as initial claims for unemployment benefits dropped by 11k to 448k for last week.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 1.23% to $120.85. Up on an overall positive day in economics and upgrades. Earnings for the season have been solid for the first quarter. A little relief may be surging through the market as Hp (NYSE: HPQ) announced a $1 billion acquisition of Palm (Nasdaq: PALM), opening up the doors for heightened competition as the merger is settled. The S&P is trading 15.2 points higher to 1206.56, a 1.28% increase.

  • iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) up 2.91% to $54.03. Overall positive sentiment for the real estate sector, and confidence that the bottom of price drops may have already hit, is fueling investors demand to get back in the shares. Earnings were good this week for several ,outlooks were increased by many companies, and upgrades were issued by several top ratings firms.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 8.29% to $6.97. Nat gas stores came in at 83 Billion cubic feet, compared to the analyst estimates for 70 - 76 Bcf. June 10 contracts are trading $0.345 lower to $4.003/mmBtu, a 7.9% drop today.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down4.27% to $19.54. Shares of the CBOE VIX are donw 10.7% today after making record gains earlier in the week on European debt downgrades.

  • Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) down 0.15% to $130.10. Shares are being led down by Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG), the largest holding in the ETF at 16.15%, as a large oil rig is gushing oil into the Gulf off of Lousiness. Transocean operated the rig, and hasn't commented on why a remote shut-off valve wasn't installed earlier.
