Notable 52-Week Highs and Lows of the Day 01/05: (M) (PIR) (ROST) High; (BKS) (GSM) (EK) Low

This report is an intraday check of some of the more notable stocks that have hit a 52-week high or low so far today.

52-Week High:
  • Macy's, Inc. (NYSE: M) high of $33.67. Macy's hitting a new annual high following strong December sales and comps, a doubled dividend, increasing its buyback plan by $1 billion, and raised guidance. Shares are up 3.3 percent to the new mark.

  • Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (NYSE: PIR) high of $15.20. Pier 1 is moving higher after December comps were reported to be up 11.3 percent. The stock was up as much as 8 percent on the session, but is now about 4 percent better.

  • Ross Stores Inc. (Nasdaq: ROST) high of $50.42. Ross Stores moving higher after December comps rose 9 percent, and it raised second-quarter 2012 earnings guidance from a range of 77 cents to 80 cents to a range of 82 cents to 83 cents, which compares to the Street estimate of 80 cents.

  • The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TJX) high of $66.22. TJX comps up 8 percent in December. The retailer also announced a two-for-one split, and reaffirmed its fourth-quarter earnings outlook, TJX up a modest 2.8 percent to the new mark Thursday.
52-Week Low:
  • Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS) low of $9.35. Barnes & Noble cut its fiscal 2012 outlook: sales from about $7.4 billion to $7-$7.2 billion, which compares to the Street estimate of $7.33 billion. Loss raised from 10-50 cents per share to $1.10-$1.40 per share. The Street is looking for a loss of 63 cents per share.

    B&N also said, "In order to capitalize on the rapid growth of the NOOK digital business, and its favorable leadership position in the expanding market for digital content, the Company has decided to pursue strategic exploratory work to separate the NOOK business."

  • Globe Specialty Metals, Inc. (NYSE: GSM) low of $12.26. Jefferies lowered its outlook on Globe Specialty to Hold, and reduced its price target from $22.50 to $16. Globe Specialty fell as much as 11.5 percent on the call today.

  • Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) low of $0.36. Kodak is about 8 percent lower on the session, following reports Wednesday that it might already be gathering paperwork and records for potential protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. bankruptcy code. For more color, click here.
