Boy Scouts Name New Council, Launch History-making Food Drive
November 10, 2009 - Pleasant Ridge, MI . . .On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at 5 pm, the Detroit and Clinton Valley Councils of the Boy Scouts of America will announce the new name of their recently merged Councils with the help of local Boy Scouts, Venturers and Cub Scouts. The announcement will be made at the Pleasant Ridge Community Center: 4 Ridge Road, Pleasant Ridge, MI.
In addition to announcing the Council's new name, the Scouts will be joined by representatives from Gleaners Community Food Bank and Kroger to kick off Scouting for Food, the largest food drive the Boy Scouts of Southeast Michigan have attempted in their 100-year history. Bags of food will be brought to the community center and loaded in to Gleaners' Mobile Food Pantry truck.
Scouting for Food started on Saturday, November 7th, when thousands of Boy Scouts across the Southeast Michigan area distributed 800,000 bags donated by Kroger to local homes. This Tuesday will begin the collection of the Kroger food bags; in which an estimated 600,000 pounds of food is expected to be donated to Gleaners, which provides food to shelters throughout the area.
"This food drive comes at a critical time for Gleaners and our hungry neighbors," says Dwayne Wells, president of Gleaners. "As the holidays approach, we are striving to meet the growing demand for emergency food. We are grateful to the Boy Scouts and Kroger for this tremendous effort."
