  • Following the worst recession in decades, early data suggests the number of suicides in the U.S. are rising. "Official data on suicides in the U.S. lag, and a 2008 national tally isn't yet available. In 2007, there were 33,185 suicides, according to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared with an average of about 32,800 in the previous three years."

  • The U.S. government is facing a wave of debt payments as the deficit swells. "With the national debt now topping $12 trillion, the White House estimates that the government's tab for servicing the debt will exceed $700 billion a year in 2019, up from $202 billion this year, even if annual budget deficits shrink drastically. Other forecasters say the figure could be much higher."

  • Former beauty-queen turned analyst Danielle Chiesi is at the center of the Raj Rajaratnam insider trading scandal. "A blond, blue-eyed former teenage beauty queen, Chiesi used her sexuality to build sources at male-dominated tech companies, says Deborah Stapleton, president of Stapleton Communications Inc., an investor relations company in Palo Alto, California." Wow! these execs must have had some low standards!
