Star Scientific (Nasdaq: STSI) 65.4% LOWER; RJ Reynolds wins a verdict in the Star Tobacco patent trial.

Merix Corporation (NASDAQ: MERX) 43.2% HIGHER; announced a major, multi-million dollar order from global avionics and communications pioneer Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL). The order is a direct result of Merix's focus on the defense and aerospace sector where the company has broadened its product offering and grown its market share in the past 14 months.

Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: SVNT) 27.7% HIGHER; announced that the Arthritis Advisory Committee appointed by the FDA recommended by a vote of 14 to 1 that KRYSTEXXA, a biologic PEGylated uricase enzyme, be granted marketing approval by the FDA for the treatment of refractory chronic gout. Retail Ventures, Inc. (NYSE: RVI) 3.2% LOWER; reports Q1 loss of $1.09, ex-items, compared to a gain of $0.10 in the same quarter last year. Revenue for the quarter was $385.8 million, versus $366.3 million in Q108.

Globalstar, Inc. (Nasdaq: GSAT) 2.4% HIGHER; has entered into definitive agreements with select institutional investors, including a number of existing stockholders and Thermo Funding Company LLC, to raise gross proceeds of up to $55 million, before deducting placement agent fees and other estimated offering expenses, in a registered direct offering. Adobe Systems (Nasdaq: ADBE) 2.3% LOWER; reports Q2 EPS of $0.35, ex-items, in-line with the analyst estimate of $0.35. Revenue for the quarter was $704.7 million, versus the consensus of $694.75 million. Sees Q3 EPS of $0.30-$0.37, versus the consensus of $0.33 and revs of $665-$715 million, versus the Street estimate of $676 million.

Whiting Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: WLL) INDICATED LOWER; announced that it has commenced a public offering of 3,000,000 shares of convertible perpetual preferred stock. Whiting will grant the underwriters for the offering an option to purchase up to an additional 450,000 shares to cover over-allotments, if any. Whiting expects to use the net proceeds to repay a portion of the debt outstanding under its credit agreement. The amounts repaid under the credit agreement will be available for Whiting to reborrow in the future.
