Active Power to Offer Containerized Power System in Conjunction with Sun Modular Datacenter
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW), inventor and manufacturer of the most energy-efficient critical power systems in the world, today announced Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) has identified and approved its PowerHouse system, a containerized power and cooling infrastructure solution to complement the Sun Modular Datacenter. Anchoring the PowerHouse system is Active Power's flywheel-based CleanSource(R) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems that are ideal for containerization due to their rugged design and ability to operate in wide ambient temperature ranges (0 to 40 degrees Celsius).
Leveraging its expertise in manufacturing flywheel-based UPS systems, Active Power has evolved its UPS technology through the design and development of its own containerized systems. PowerHouse provides a modular, integrated power and cooling infrastructure solution for the Sun Modular Datacenter that includes a standby generator, high-efficiency flywheel-based UPS system, chiller and switchgear. The streamlined, space-saving package is ideal for end users who have limited facility space and want to maximize use of revenue-generating floor space. As a result of the high-efficiency and pre-packaged system design, PowerHouse can save customers up to 45 percent in total cost of ownership. Since late 2007, Active Power has delivered its PowerHouse systems to clients in Europe and Asia, accounting for more than 10 megawatts of critical power protection.
"Energy consumption and facility space continue to be pain points for data center operators," said Michael Markides, analyst at IMS Research. "The challenge lies in how to help organizations reduce their energy consumption with green products that don't consume a lot of space, but that also carry low capital and operating expenses. Green solutions that can offer these attributes along with scalability will continue to be sought after from end users, particularly from those organizations that are building new data centers."
Active Power's containerized systems are manufactured and assembled offsite, requiring only minimal assembly at the customer location and ensuring little disruption at the customer facility. The systems can be deployed in a number of environments, including the roof, redundant loading bays, secure compounds or parking lots. Extremely mobile, the system can quickly be disconnected and redeployed at another location in a short period of time. These systems can be, and have been, used for a variety of different applications, including space-constrained facilities, modular power expansion, rental fleet, disaster recovery and short-term business operations.
Active Power will team up with Sun on two city stops during the "Discover Sun" Sun Modular Datacenter world tour - Portland, Ore. (June 24), and Bellevue, Wash. (June 26). Sun and Active Power will conduct a half day of technology briefings and tours of the Sun Modular Datacenter in each of these cities.
