Will Microsoft (MSFT) Surface Pricing Start Above $1000?

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) shares are trading lower Wednesday amid new, and possibly bad, rumors related to the pricing scheme of its new Surface tablets.

According to WPCentral, a screen grab of Swedish news site Webhallen.com shows the cheapest Surface tablet (equipped with ARM chips and Windows RT) priced at 6990 SEK. A quick conversion reveals this price to be above $1000.

That price would make an entry level Surface more expensive then a top-level Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad.

Let's hope the promise of keeping Windows RT pricing in line with other ARM-based tablets and Windows Pro with Ultrabooks holds true. Or else Microsoft might end up with another dud on its hands.
