After meeting with suppliers in China, analysts at Topeka Capital are confident Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has a low priced iPhone in the works. Analysts also believe Apple with launch a refreshed high-end smartphone, the iPhone 5s. Research by analyst Brian White suggests a combined June announcement and a July launch. There is also new speculation Apple is working on a mystery hybrid-tablet / smartphone dubbed the "iPhad".

Speculation about the iPhad relates to conflicting reports about the screen size of the iPhone 5s. Based on previous information from sources in China, Topeka analysts said they believed the 5s would be available in multiple sizes. Other sources in China say the iPhone 5s will only be available with a screen size of 4 inches. White believes it is possible both sources are right.

"The reason for this disparity is unclear; however, it may indicate that there is extra secrecy around a slightly larger screen (or possibly a slightly smaller screen for the "iPhone mini") or Apple may already be thinking ahead with the supply chain to the iPhone 6. Also, it is possible that Apple is working on an entirely new device altogether such as the 'iPhad'"

While analysts have no additional evidence to support this point, if Apple wants to remain relevant in China and other parts of the world it absolutely needs a 5 to 5.5 inch iPhone or iPhad, thinks Topeka.

"We believe it is inevitable that Apple will need a 5-inch to 5.5-inch iPhone or 'iPhad' if the Company wants to remain competitive in China and elsewhere in Asia,” concluded the analyst.
