Rumors Microsoft (MSFT) Could Buy Nokia (NOK) Phone Unit Heard on the Street, But Seem Unlikely

Chatter Monday suggests Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) could soon begin negotiations to work out a deal for Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) massive phone unit.

One blogger, who first had news related to the Nokia-Windows Phone deal and the launch of OVI Store, said talks are commencing and a deal might close before the end of 2011.

While the rumor is making the rounds on Wall Street this morning, it should be noted that such a deal seems like a stretch. For one, Nokia's phone unit currently generates all of the company's profits (and nearly 70 percent of sales). Further, as the Street gave a dismal-at-best review of Microsoft's $8.5 billion purchase of Skype last week, one has to wonder what Mr. Softy could do with assets from Nokia's phone segment, especially considering the two are already partnered through Windows Phone.
