Apple (AAPL) Targeting Gamers; Wants Advanced Game Controller

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is targeting more sophisticated gamers and is trying to encourage the development of advanced controllers, according to reports in WSJ.
Apple wants the controllers to work with iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches and Macs, and it wants a standard set of controls, with games that can be played with or without controllers.
Interestingly, Apple documents describe controllers that devices are inserted into, with control buttons around the edge.
Reports say Logitech (Nasdaq: LOGI) is already planning a controller which will be released in the fall. Another company called PowerA might also be working on related Apple accessories.
The move would be key for Apple as it looks to potentially take command of yet another market. This week, new video game consoles from the likes of Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Sony (NYSE: SNE) were released, bringing up the question once again: will mobile devices unseat stationary, bulky gaming systems? Though the question might have been an easy one to downplay in the 1990s and even the 2000s, many independent companies are coming out with compact consoles which are geared specifically for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android games. One example is Mad Catz (AMEX: MCZ) M.O.J.O., which will link up Android games to an HDTV and allow players to use a controller versus trying to utilize a touchscreen for controls.
