Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) said in phone talks with Vodafone (Nasdaq: VOD) and O2 -- a unit of Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) in the U.K., according to the Financial Times.
Vodaphone is already said to have a relationship with Amazon in terms of data plans for the Kindle and other e-readers.
Discussions might center around similar exclusivity that AT&T (NYSE: T) might have for Amazon's smartphone in the U.S.
While AT&T saw a big boost in its mobile sales after scoring an exclusive deal with Apple for the iPhone in 2007, most don't believe that the Amazon device will have a similar impact.
Amazon might even be giving some strong concessions to carriers as its overall goal is to boost Amazon Prime membership. It was reported Monday that Prime members generally spend about twice as much per year as non-Prime Amazon shoppers.
