U.S. Auto Sales Burn Rubber in August (F) (GM) (TM)

Sales of passenger cars in the U.S. increased by 28 percent in August compared to the same month last year.
Sales of light trucks were up 20 percent over the same period. Honda (NYSE: HMC) and Toyota (NYSE: TM) saw the big gains, growing total sales by 60 percent and 46 percent respectively.
Both of the top U.S.-run companies posted solid results, with Ford (NYSE: F) leading GM (NYSE: GM) in terms of growth (Ford 13 percent vs. GM 10). However, GM was top dog in terms of overall sales, beating 2nd place Ford by 44,000 vehicles.
Volkswagen also performed well, growing sales by 48 percent.
