Shares of BMC Software (Nasdaq: BMC) opened higher this morning on reports from Bloomberg the company could be the target of a buyout by KKR & Co, TPG capital, and possibly even Bain Capital. Activist investor Elliot Associates has been pushing for a sale.

In the past, the company was approached by Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), Dell (Nasdaq: Dell), EMC (NYSE: EMC), and CA Technologies (Nasdaq: CA), but those deals didn't materialize because of lack of interest in BMC's mainframe business.

Shares of BMC last traded at $40.94, up 1.5 percent.
