LITTLE ROCK, Ark. and TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- With veterans making up nearly 11 percent of the adult homeless population, WellCare Health Plans, Inc.'s (NYSE: WCG) Community Foundation contributed $1,000 to the Veterans Villages of America, Inc., a nonprofit organization helping veterans in need. In addition to the donation, volunteers from WellCare helped renovate a duplex that will soon become homes for veterans and their families.
"I am grateful for WellCare's donation as it goes a long way in purchasing the items needed to help renovate the duplex that will serve as a home for homeless veterans," said retired Col. Mike Ross, board member of Veterans Villages of America. "I believe the WellCare associates renovating the duplex had the greatest impact. They bring awareness to the many struggles that our veterans have trying to readjust to life in their communities."
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that more than 47,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. In addition, 1.4 million other veterans are at-risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
"At WellCare, our mission is to help our members live better, healthier lives – and that often means reaching out to support community groups like Veterans Villages of America to help strengthen our member's communities," said Tim Mullen, chief operating officer, WellCare in Arkansas.
Veterans Villages of America provides housing assistance to homeless veterans, job support and counseling to unemployed veterans and opportunities for making connections with fellow veterans.
"We had a great experience helping renovate this duplex," said William "Drew" Kinningham, a district sales manager for WellCare in Arkansas. "It was hard work, but being able to pull together for a great cause that supports people who have kept our country safe made the work rewarding."
