New device accounts for variability in anatomy and technique to capture accurate, reliable readings

SKANEATELES FALLS,N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Welch Allyn, a leading medical diagnostic device company that is now part of Hill-Rom (NYSE: HRC), has introduced a new electronic ear thermometer that offers advanced measurement technology to help capture accurate, reliable temperature readings. The Welch Allyn Braun ThermoScan® PRO 6000 Ear Thermometer with exclusive PerfecTemp™ technology helps overcome challenges presented by ear canal anatomy and variability in probe placement. The thermometer collects information about the direction and depth of ear probe placement and automatically incorporates it into temperature calculation—helping to increase the accuracy of readings.

“Precision in measurement has been shown to be influenced by ear canal anatomy and variability in user technique,” said Jamie Wood, manager, Blood Pressure and Thermometry at Welch Allyn. “The shallow placement of the probe in the ear canal can result in lower, inaccurate readings. The thermometer’s unique PerfecTemp technology captures accurate readings by automatically accounting for difficult ear canal anatomy and shallow placement of the probe.”

Clinical studies have shown that the ear is an excellent site for capturing accurate measurements as temperatures taken in the ear reflect the body’s core temperature1. Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature2 since the eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control center in the brain3, the hypothalamus. Therefore, changes in body temperature may be reflected sooner in the ear as opposed to axillary, oral and rectal sites. Furthermore, the ear is less invasive for the patient than axillary, oral or rectal sites—helping clinicians to quickly and comfortably capture measurements, even with patients who are unable to cooperate during measurement.

“The Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 is specifically designed to help reduce inaccuracies, improve staff productivity and enhance patient satisfaction,” said Wood. “The combination of an effective measurement site with industry-leading technology helps produce accurate, reliable temperature readings that clinicians can trust. These readings appear in seconds directly on the backlit display, helping to enhance clinical workflow and improve patient experience.”

The new Welch Allyn thermometer also includes ExacTemp® technology that provides an active user feedback to ensure proper stability of the probe during measurement to help improve accuracy in calculating temperatures. The thermometer’s pre-warmed sensor and soft, disposable probe covers help further enhance patient comfort and minimize the risk of cross-contamination. The durable, lightweight thermometer’s memory recall feature provides the last temperature taken. The optional charging station features electronic and mechanical security enhancements to help discourage theft and a superior recharging system that provides up to 700 measurements on a fresh charge and up to 350,000 readings over the life of the rechargeable battery.

The Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 is the latest addition to the Welch Allyn brand of industry leading clinical-grade thermometers including the SureTemp® Plus 690/692 and CareTemp® Touch Free Thermometer. Welch Allyn thermometers are tested for performance and usability in real world settings to ensure they deliver trusted modalities across a variety of environments. PerfecTemp technology is not yet offered in the Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 outside the USA and Canada.
