WGL Volunteers Helped Hundreds Beat Winter’s Icy Chill

Annual Day of Weatherization Delivered Energy Efficiency and Solar Power

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- WGL’s annual “Day of Weatherization” volunteer event brought the warmth and light of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy to hundreds of local residents who might otherwise have difficulty staying warm this winter or keeping the lights on.

Throughout the day on Saturday, November 5, 215 volunteers of WGL employees, friends and families came together to do everything from weatherizing homes to installing solar panels. By the time the teams were finished, 105 homes across Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, will have had their heating and electrical bills reduced.

The volunteers were busy:

• Replacing or installing caulking on windows and doors
• Installing plastic on windows
• Providing weather stripping
• Installing faucet aerators that reduce the amount of hot water used, thereby saving money
• Replacing furnace filters

In addition to providing these efficiency benefits, WGL partnered with solar provider GRID Alternatives, a nonprofit organization that brings the benefits of solar technology to people who would not otherwise have access.

Together, WGL and GRID installed solar panels on an affordable housing apartment building in Southeast Washington, D.C., which is home to more than 185 residents in 94 units. The electricity generated by the solar array will power all common areas, and allow for investment of those savings in refurbishing tenant apartments for better energy efficiency and lower heating costs. Tenant units will also be upgraded with new windows, new heating and cooling units, new energy efficient kitchen appliances and hot water heaters.

Area officials joining WGL and GRID Alternatives for the Day of Weatherization included Tommy Wells, Director of the District Department of Energy and Environment and Trayon White, Ward 8 Democratic Nominee, champions of building a sustainable and smart metro area.

Continuing a tradition that began in 2005 with Washington Gas leading the weatherization of area homes, this year’s community energy efficiency efforts included volunteers from all WGL entities: Washington Gas, WGL Energy, Hampshire Gas and WGL Midstream.
