University of Texas Launches One-Year Fellowships for Surgical and Medical Weight Loss in Houston in July

Doctors practicing and teaching in the area of obesity medicine at the UTHealth Center for Obesity Medicine and Metabolic Performance began training fellows in the latest strategies and care in the field of surgical and medical weight loss in Houston in July.

The trainees successfully applied to the one-year Clinical Fellowship in Obesity Medicine, the fifth such fellowship offered in the United States. Recruitment has also included openings for another fellowship focused on the same surgical and medical weight loss education to start in July of 2017.

The staff at the center welcomed applications from residents or recent graduates in any of three of training programs: internal medicine, family medicine, or endocrinology. Trainees may come from other backgrounds, but consideration is determined case by case.

The aim is to provide these trainees with practical obesity medicine experience, built on a foundation of evaluating patients struggling with obesity and helping them to manage their condition. The end goal is to equip trainees with the skills and expertise they need to enter into and lead the nascent obesity medicine discipline in clinical and academic settings.

The fellowship covers both surgical and medical weight loss treatments, as well as lifestyle, nutrition, and behavior changes. Most of the trainees' year will be spent learning about obesity and its comorbidities in a clinical environment. They will also have an opportunity to participate in research related to obesity treatment outcomes, trials of new treatments, or both.

More specifically, trainees will assess patients who struggle with obesity or suffer from a related metabolic disorder and come up with recommended treatment plans that may involve surgical or medical weight loss strategies based on measuring body composition and metabolism, combining therapies, and integrating care.

Ultimately, trainees who complete the fellowship should be able to teach obesity medicine to others, including medical students, residents in family medicine, and endocrinology trainees who are working through a rotation in the same center.
