University of Phoenix Wins SHRM Student Case Competition

SHRM awards human resource students for developing effective solutions to business problems

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Human resource students from University of Phoenix® School of Business won the undergraduate Case Competition at the recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Case Competition – West Division.

During the competition, SHRM presented each team with a different HR problem covering topics such as management practices, staffing and recruiting, compensation and benefits, and labor relations. Teams had to determine a solution, write a paper on the project and create an oral presentation. Teams presented their projects in oral presentations to a panel of SHRM member judges.

Over the course of the two-day event, students also received information relevant to the HR profession through professional speakers and practicing HR professionals. SHRM sponsors three Case Competition events across the United States annually. Twenty-one teams, comprised of undergraduate students from schools across the United States, competed in a Case Competition March 12-14 in Ontario, Calif. University of Phoenix won the undergraduate division.

“The SHRM Case Competitions are a great way for students to apply in-class learning to real world human resource scenarios,” said Laurie McIntosh, SHRM-SCP, director of membership at SHRM. “Students also have the opportunity to network with students from other universities and showcase their knowledge to HR practitioners.”

The following students and faculty advisor were part of the University of Phoenix team:

• Leslie Oakley is a 2015 University of Phoenix graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Human Resource Management. She is a member of Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society.
• Katrina Ballard is a 2014 University of Phoenix graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Human Resource Management. She is a member of Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society.
• Michelle Rhoads is a 2014 University of Phoenix graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Human Resource Management.
• Student Chapter Faculty Advisor: Dr. Rosalie Lopez, JD, DM, is a University of Phoenix School of Business faculty member who has taught for the University for 20 years. Lopez earned her undergraduate degree in business from the University of Northern Colorado, her Master of Business Administration from the University of North Texas, and her doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center. Dr. Lopez also holds a Doctor of Management degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix and is a member of the American Bar Association Advisory Panel.

Winning teams received free registrations and travel to SHRM’s Annual Conference and Exposition held June 28 – July 1 in Las Vegas, Nev.
