The City of Hattiesburg’s E³ Health Initiative – Educate, Enroll, Empower – aims to reduce the number of uninsured children and families in Hattiesburg by providing free Medicaid/Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) application assistance. The goal of the program is to reduce the uninsured rate by 50 percent in three local school zones where 6,000 eligible but unenrolled people have been identified.

The donated laptops will offer additional enrollment sites for Medicaid/CHIP application assistance through The Hub City Health Lab, which will enable local residents to access health related information and resources available in the community. Each month The City of Hattiesburg’s E³ Health Initiative offers enrollment sites at 25-30 different locations.

Many community partners have expressed the need to connect via technology with the people they serve. In response, UnitedHealthcare has created computer labs to serve vulnerable populations, such as inner city youth, the elderly and people with disabilities.

“On behalf of the City of Hattiesburg, we commend UnitedHealthcare for understanding the benefits of providing health care to our community,” said Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny L. DuPree, Ph.D. “Computers are an integral part of the E³ Health Initiative and will connect people with the health research and resources they need to make informed decisions about their health care.”

The donated computers help people in the community access health information, assistance programs and other online resources. UnitedHealthcare has donated nearly 3,000 computers in 24 states since the program began in 2012.

“UnitedHealthcare recognizes the need in Hattiesburg for increased computer and Internet tools that help people in our neighborhoods gain access to critical health information and resources online,” said Jocelyn Chisholm Carter, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Mississippi.

UnitedHealthcare serves more than 350,000 people in Mississippi with a care provider network of 100 hospitals and nearly 9,000 care providers statewide.
