USG Delivering on Promise of Nationwide Availability of USG Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Panels Firecode® X — The First and Lightest Type X Wallboard in the Industry

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today USG announced nationwide availability of the first and lightest Type X wallboard in the industry, USG Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Panels Firecode® X. This panel is available in one of two Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Type Designations (Type ULIX and Type ULX), depending on geography.

These panels are the industry’s first lightweight Type X gypsum panel designed for commercial and residential construction. Both UL Type Designations of USG Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Panels Firecode® X have been formulated to achieve all the strength and performance characteristics as standard 5/8″ USG Sheetrock® Brand Firecode® Gypsum Panels at a significantly reduced weight. For contractors and gypsum specialty dealers, lighter weight means transportation efficiencies, productivity gains, reduced fatigue during handling and possible safety benefits.

The primary difference between the ULIX and ULX panels is that the ULIX board requires the use of insulation in the cavity on one-hour fire-rated steel-framed assemblies, which is an industry best practice designed to meet thermal and acoustical performance requirements,” adds Schmidt.

• Pacific

UL Type ULX panels are available in the following regions:

• New England
• Mid-Atlantic
• South Atlantic
• East Central

• Complies with ASTM C1396 physical properties for 5/8″ Type X gypsum wallboard
• Listed by UL for use in fire-rated partitions when installed either vertically or horizontally with aligned tapered edges on standard and equivalent UL-approved 25-gauge studs (per UL Design U419)
• UL Classified as to fire resistance, surface burning characteristics and core combustibility
• Can be used where 5/8″ Type X panels have been specified
• Offers comparable sound performance on wood and 25-gauge studs
• Qualifies as a low-VOC emitting material (meets CA 01350), like all USG Sheetrock® Brand Gypsum Panels
• Uses up to 15% less water in manufacturing than standard 5/8″ Type X panels
