USA Medical Card Offers Heart Healthy Tips

February 2, 2016 11:05 AM EST

Washington D.C. (PRWEB) February 02, 2016

February is heart health month. USA Medical Card reminds us that high blood pressure affects over 67 million Americans and is the leading cause of stroke and heart disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that people with high blood pressure are three times more likely to die from heart disease and four times more likely to die from a stroke.

Regular monitoring of blood pressure is important. Screening is available in doctors' offices and drugstores. USA Medical Card offers additional tips for keeping the heart healthy:

1. Speak with a doctor about current blood pressure level and set a goal. Then discuss a plan to reach that goal over time by making necessary changes.
2. Lower sodium intake. Too much sodium raises blood pressure; so make the choice to reduce the amount of salt in recipes and meals. Focus on eating fruits, vegetables and unrefined fiber-rich, whole-grain foods.
3. Be active every day. Exercise improves quality of life. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking on a daily basis will benefit the heart.
4. Lose weight. Too much fat, especially at the waist, creates a higher risk for health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Even losing five to ten pounds can significantly reduce blood pressure.
5. Take blood pressure medicine as directed. Fill prescriptions and remember to take medicine as recommended. Ask the doctor or pharmacist for help if directions are not understood, or if side effects occur.

USA Medical Card Co-Founder and President Jordan Sessler said, "Taking prescriptions as directed is so important to maintaining your heart health. We know this is becoming more and more difficult for people to do given the rising prices of these medications. That is why we provide our free pharmacy discount card to help reduce the cost of these vital medicines people need to keep their hearts healthy."

The pre-activated USA Medical Card is accepted at more than 62,000 pharmacies across the country--local, regional and national chains such as CVS, Costco, Target, Rite Aid, Walmart and Walgreens. Eligible Rx medications include Diovan, Valsartan, Edarbyclor and other blood pressure drugs as well as thousands of popular medications.
