U-Haul Reveals Big Plans for Once-Abandoned Brownsville Store

September 17, 2016 6:47 AM EDT

BROWNSVILLE, Texas, Sept. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents of Brownsville seeking a convenient moving and self-storage facility will soon have a newly renovated U-Haul store to meet their needs.

U-Haul Moving & Storage on Boca Chica at 2400 Boca Chica Blvd. began offering truck and trailer rentals, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers and other services soon after acquiring the Burlington Coat Factory site in February.

Extensive renovations will continue over the next two years as nearly 1,500 indoor and outdoor self-storage units of various sizes – climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled – are built on the 12.18-acre property.

"It's long overdue for us to be a part of this community," U-Haul Company of Corpus Christi president Mark Reinitz said. "This will be a first-class storage facility serving a great town along the Mexican border where people need moving and self-storage services."

When construction is completed, the Brownsville facility will offer 24 drive-up outdoor units; 478 indoor non-climate-controlled units; 925 indoor climate-controlled units; and 42 securely gated RV, boat and vehicle storage spaces.

Stop by U-Haul Moving & Storage on Boca Chica to see our progress, or call (956) 525-4659. Hours of operation are from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and Saturday; 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Reserve equipment at uhaul.com or contact Reservations at 1-800-GO-UHAUL.

"Boca Chica has been one of the busiest streets in Brownsville for as long as I can remember," Reinitz added. "This building sat vacant for more than five years after Burlington Coat Factory® moved. It's exciting for the community to have U-Haul renovate this large building, especially when so many people drive by every day."

The acquisition of the 106,784-square-foot facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

Reinitz expects dozens of local full- and part-time jobs will be created from the acquisition and repurposing of the facility. U-Haul places a strong emphasis on hiring locally in order to benefit the communities in which it operates.
