Toronto Police Break Ground on New Home for 11 Division

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 6, 2009) - The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, His Worship David Miller, Mayor of the City of Toronto, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee, and Toronto Police Chief William Blair were pleased to break ground today for the construction of a new $29 million facility for the Toronto Police 11 Division.

"Modern facilities are needed to give law enforcement the upper hand to tackle modern criminals," said Minister Van Loan. "Through these investments from Canada's Economic Action Plan, we are helping make Toronto's streets safe."

"I am incredibly proud of the investments the City of Toronto is making with the Federal Government to rebuild and modernize our infrastructure from potholes to police stations," said Mayor David Miller. "The new 11 Division building is a project that not only meets the needs of the Toronto Police Service and the community it serves, but it respects the heritage of the area and meets 21st century environmental goals."

"This innovative building project represents a powerful and inspiring collaboration between the police and the community," said Chair Mukherjee. "It demonstrates, as well, our twin commitment to preserving heritage and respecting the environment."

"The groundbreaking for the new 11 Division police station is the latest important step in a project marked by a very productive relationship between the Toronto Police Service and the community," said Chief Blair. "We have worked very closely with local people to ensure a smooth transition into a new building that respects the area's traditions."

The Government of Canada will provide $9.6 million for this project through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, and the City of Toronto will provide the remaining balance of $19.3 million.

Today's groundbreaking is a result of an unprecedented agreement between the Government of Canada and the City of Toronto of more than a half-billion dollars for over 500 community infrastructure projects that will create jobs and help build stronger communities.
