Colorado companies raised more than $337M in 2015
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- An acquisition that made global headlines, significant fundraising, FDA approvals and clearances, and new and expanded facilities marked a significant growth year for the 600 life science companies, organizations and institutions that call Colorado home, according to the Colorado BioScience Association.

Because of our track record of success, more companies and organizations are choosing to put down roots and expand operations in our state.”
Many Colorado bioscience organizations met significant business and research milestones, launched new products and raised funds. Some examples of the 2015 successes achieved by CBSA members include:
Acquisition
- Medtronic acquired Covidien for $49.9B. The company employs thousands of Coloradans in Boulder County, Denver and Parker.
Fundraising
- Nivalis Therapeutics (Nasdaq: NVLS) raised $88M through its successful IPO.
- Precision Biopsy raised $33.6 million in new equity investments.
- miRagen Therapeutics secured $41M in Series C Financing.
- Spectranetics (NASDAQ: SPNC) completed the refinancing of its outstanding debt and closed on a new $110 million senior secured credit facility.
- Surefire Medical closed $15M in Series C Financing.
- Colorado life science companies and organizations raised a total of $337.8M.
FDA Designations
- Cerapedics: FDA approval for i-FACTOR™ biologic bone graft that utilizes a synthetic small peptide (P-15) bound to an anorganic bone mineral (ABM).
- dBMEDx, Inc.: FDA clearance to market its bladder scanner, the BBS Revolution™.
- Surefire Medical: FDA clearance for Surefire Precision, a direct-to-tumor embolization device.
- Clovis Oncology: Submitted its NDA for rociletinib, which received an FDA breakthrough therapy designation in 2014.
New and Expanded Facilities
- Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority opened Bioscience 2, a building that combines research, business and education under one roof.
- AlloSource opened new headquarters in Centennial.
- Terumo BCT expanded its global headquarters in Lakewood.
- AstraZeneca announced it would establish a new global biologics production site at the former Amgen facility in Boulder.
Colorado’s almost 600 life science organizations range from those moving from early-stage research and development, through clinical trials and into full-fledged commercialization. Those companies are responsible for close to 600 commercial products developed in Colorado. More than 122,000 jobs can be attributed to the state’s life science industry.
