The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) honors its volunteers during National Volunteer Recognition Week.

The grand celebration got off to a festive start with a welcome and reflection by Deb Dettor, CCAR's Managing Director. Deb then introduced Sandy Valentine, the wife of CCAR's Executive Director Phil Valentine who was not in attendance because of his Walk for Recovery on the Appalachian Trail. To everyone's delight, Phil was able to express his gratitude to the volunteers via video. Board President Tom Kirk then thanked the volunteers for their dedication to carrying out CCAR's mission. Volunteer Manager Conrad Sienkiewicz read the names of the 55 Bronze Presidential Volunteer Service Award recipients who gave 100 hours or more of volunteer service. Windham Recovery Community Center Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Wyatt handed out the Bronze pins to the 23 recipients present that evening. Out of a total of 22 Silver awards earned for 250 or more hours of service, 13 volunteers were present and received their pins from Hartford Recovery Community Center Volunteer Coordinator Virginia Adams. Bridgeport Recovery Community Center Volunteer Coordinator Danielle Elliott handed out 11 Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Awards to volunteers who gave 500 or more hours of service. The volunteer with the most hours in 2014 was Mark Bogues, who volunteered 1396 hours and he was especially honored with a package of four tickets courtesy of the New Britain Rock Cats.

All of these volunteers received pins and letters from the White House, along with a certificate of recognition from the CT Attorney General George Jepsen. Long-time CCAR volunteer Dorian Parker ended the awards portion of the evening by thanking and inspiring volunteers as he shared the impact CCAR had on his life. Following a buffet dinner, the attendees danced to songs played by DJ Michael.
