TechCrunch Disrupt Returns to London for Second Year Running

March 31, 2015 1:30 AM EDT

Event to Take Place at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, 5th - 8th December 2015

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- TechCrunch announced today that the third TechCrunch Disrupt Europe conference will take place from 5th-8th December at the Copper Box Arena in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, East London.

TechCrunch Disrupt brings world-renowned speakers, who have included Soundcloud founder and CEO, Alex Ljung, chairman and CEO of Salesforce.com, Marc Benioff, CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, CEO and Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, as well as hundreds of outstanding start-ups to audiences globally, making it one of the most anticipated technology conferences of the year.

The London conference kicks off with the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon from 5th to 6th December, followed by two days of on stage interviews and panels with some of the biggest names in technology. The speakers will give attendees advice, invaluable insight and first-hand knowledge on what it takes to build an industry-leading company. In addition, TechCrunch Disrupt will also welcome Startup Battlefield and Startup Alley to London.

Startup Battlefield competitors pitch to teams of judges, who include some of the startup world’s foremost investors, innovators and influencers in the tech community. TechCrunch identifies emerging companies to demo and compete for a prize of £30,000 and the coveted Disrupt Cup. The 508 companies who have participated in the Battlefield have raised $4.4 billion in funding post appearing in Battlefield. Battlefield is one of the most effective event-based launch platforms for startups in the word. Last year Crate took home the prize, a start-up that makes central database services obsolete and enables users to build a back end scalable database in minutes. Previous Battlefield competitions have launched companies such as Dropbox, Mint.com, Yammer and Fitbit, which are now heavyweights in the global tech industry.

Startup Alley offers another way for early-stage companies to gain exposure with a format that encourages both exhibiting and networking, as well as high visibility. Roughly 150 startups make up Startup Alley with companies showcasing on the Monday and Tuesday of the event. Startups can apply for a space at Startup Alley here.

According to Tech City, London is growing faster than many other digital hubs including New York. Twenty-seven percent of all job growth in London comes from the digital market, with approximately 582,000 people now employed by the tech sector in London. Recent research supported by Bloomberg suggests the tech and information sector in London, Southeast and East England – including Oxford and Cambridge – is growing faster than that of California.

London continues to cement its reputation as a leader in financial technology. In the recent FinTech Futures report, the FinTech industry generated over £20bn of revenue in 2014 with some 135,000 people working in the sector across the country.

Mike Butcher, Editor At Large of TechCrunch, said: “Last year European startups raised more money than they did during the dot com boom. Much of that money and startup activity is coming out of London, as European entrepreneurs are often using it as a bridge to the Valley. At the same time, it remains the first beachhead for many US startups looking to scale in Europe. So there are hard and fast reasons why it made sense for TechCrunch to return to London with Disrupt. Plus, we set off a "media atomic bomb" last year, with multiple media outlets covering the startups that launched on our stage. We aim to repeat it”

Gordon Innes, CEO of London & Partners, said: “TechCrunch Disrupt is one of the pre-eminent events on the global tech calendar, and I am delighted that its organisers are bringing it back to London. Our city is in the midst of a tech boom, producing companies and ideas that are changing the world and creating jobs and economic growth for the UK, and hosting this major event here acknowledges London’s success and shows that global attention is focused on what is being produced here.”
