Statement by Alzheimer's Foundation of America on the Death of Legendary Women's Basketball Coach Pat Summitt
NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 06/28/16 -- "The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Pat Summitt. Coach Summitt and her family did not shrink back and hide from the public after her diagnosis of Alzheimer's; rather, they saw the opportunity to do something -- to leverage her notoriety as a way to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease nationally and locally and to raise money for much-needed research -- and did it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Summitt family," said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., president and chief executive officer of AFA.
Bert Brodsky, chairman of the board of directors, said "It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the loss of a truly inspirational leader. I offer my deepest sympathies to Ms. Summitt's family and friends. Ms. Summitt passed away at the age of 64, five years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. It is tragic to lose an incredible role model to such an insidious disease. We are determined to continue our efforts in the battle against Alzheimer's disease, which affects more than 5 million Americans, and one day, help find a cure so that more people don't have to suffer with this disease."
