South Wales Charity Cycle Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

April 27, 2015 7:01 PM EDT

Cardiff, UK (PRWEB UK) 28 April 2015

The often gruelling event challenges participants of all abilities to cycle the 100 miles from Cardiff to Tenby, Pembrokeshire in a day.

What began as a slightly foolhardy challenge over a pint for a handful of mates over 10 years ago, the event has quickly gathered momentum to become an established date in the Welsh cycling calendar.

From humble beginnings of only four riders, the event now attracts over 1,700 keen amateur cyclists from as far afield as Laos.

The Carten 100 is a 'fun ride', not a race. That is, if 100 miles cycling into a westerly wind can be considered 'fun'.

'There are lots of sportives and races that competitive cyclists can enter, but we want the Carten to be more of an enjoyable day out' explains Lloyd Ridgwell, one of the founding members and chief executive of principal sponsor, SofaSofa.

'Of course cycling 100 miles is a serious challenge but when you throw in a pub or two along the way it becomes a lot more bearable. And we help to raise money and awareness for lots of good causes in the process.'

To date the event has raised over £320,000 for children's charities such as the Noah's Ark foundation, Ty Hafan and JDRF. This year the goal is to raise as much as £80,000 for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.
